A Very Big Brag – CH. Woodlake's
Overnight Express AKA Skye
It is with great pleasure that I
announce to you all that today (Oct. 24) my sweet girl, Skye, was
awarded her championship in the Australian Shepherd Club of America.
Skye was named class winner and then
went on to take Winner’s Bitch to a 3 point major and then was named
Best of Winners and Best of Opposite Sex under Senior Breeder Judge
Barbara Applegate. Of course, I was thrilled beyond words. I have
to express my deepest appreciation to my good friend, Heidi Mobley.
Without Heidi this would never have been possible. She has
encouraged me and supported me and she has expertly handled Skye to
this wonderful conclusion to showing. I am a very fortunate person
to claim the Mobley family as my friends. I also have to say a
heartfelt “THANK YOU” to the judges today for recognizing the beauty
of my little heart dog.
This journey for Skye and me began in
May 2007 at TNT Show in Rendon, TX. It concluded today, one year
and five months after her first win. This is just an awesome
feeling for me.
I hope to have photos soon to share
with you all. There are so many folks that deserve a big “Thank
You” for all of your encouragement as we traveled down this road. I
am sure I would leave someone out if I began to list all the folks –
but you know who you are and I appreciate each and every one of you.
I have learned a great deal from having had this experience. I have
received pointers from several of the show judges and from several
of the friends I met just by being a part of this wonderful breed. -

Report
on Mini-reunion in Colorado

Our outing was
great and if you missed it then you missed a wonderful time.
We had about 23
people present and we really enjoyed the cool mountain air. We
gathered at June’s house on Friday evening for a lovely buffet
dinner of Italian food. She served some of the best shrimp cocktail
I have ever had in my life. On Saturday we gathered in Vail,
Colorado where we enjoyed a wonderful barbeque dinner and once again
the cool mountain air. There were not as many who came to Vail but
we still had a great time. There were a couple of folks who only
came to Vail so we got to see them.
A Great big
"Thank you" is in order to June Weiss and Larry Doty. We could not
have had such a great time without their combined efforts.
Those in attendance were: Don and
Jeanne Blanton, Gary and Beverly Byrd (their first time to attend
one of these gatherings), Joan and Fred Weaver, Paul and Anne Isham,
myself, Dianne and John Benyak, Judy and Herb Prouty, Larry and Lucy
Doty (their first time to attend one of these gatherings) June
Weiss, Jeanne Darden Bruner (her first time to attend one of the
gatherings), Walter and Dolores Marshall (their first time to attend
one of these events), Ann Dale, Denny Hamilton May (her first time
to attend) & Marguerite and Roy McWilliams.
Saturday while
shopping in Vail, Dianne Benyak tripped and fell and fractured her
wrist. She spent a good while in the Vail ER and doctors made
temporary repairs but told her to see an Orthopedic when she got
home, as she would need surgery to really get the bones back in
place. They arrived at the dinner with her arm in a cast and
sling.
The aspens were
not at their best – but by this week or the first of next week they
will be all in their glorious yellow color. The sides of the
mountains will be so beautiful. Still for those of us who do not
get to see the changing of the seasons much there was enough color
to make it really beautiful for us. A lot of the pines have been
attacked by pine beetles and are dead. This is very sad. I do not
know what can be done but Larry Doty told me that in a few years
this insect would have killed all of the pines. Apparently, there
is no spray that will kill the insect.
The weather was
really nice. It was warm in the daytime and cool at night. It only
rained one time and that was while we were all eating that wonderful
BBQ dinner. It came a hard rain shower and then it passed over in
about 45 minutes. We then were treated to a beautiful cool night.
June had made a fire in the fireplace and we just sat and enjoyed
each other’s company. There was a lot of catching up to do with
several of us.
Ann Dale and Walter Marshall and his
wife did not come to Vail. But they did go back up to Walter’s
house in Laramie Wyoming. Walter said he lived about 90 minutes
from Denver so they came to Denver and then went back to his home in
Wyoming. Paul and Anne Isham did not come to Vail either as Anne
has a sister not far from Denver so they visited with her.
We had expected
six more to join us at one of these places but for some reason they
did not make it. So I hope all is well with those folks. This was
the first time we had taken one of these events out of state and it
turned out so well. So I hope some of you who live in other parts
of the country will consider hosting one of the gatherings. I will
do all within my power to get the word out. I do not have to be
present but I enjoy them so much I will make every effort to be
present. Most of the folks who come to these events tell me that
they have so much fun that they do not want to miss future events.
So we are talking about trying to have a spring fling somewhere in
2009. A couple of folks have made some suggestions so I am just
waiting to hear what folks want to do. So let me hear from all of
you with your suggestions.
There is some
illness in our group. I just learned that Jackie Horner Sledge’s
husband, Bob, has been diagnosed with pre-leukemia and is currently
hospitalized in El Paso TX. They live in Cloudcroft, New Mexico.
Please keep Bob Sledge in your prayers. He will take chemotherapy
on an outpatient basis after this round in the hospital. Today
Dianne Bordelon Benyak was supposed to have seen her orthopedist so I
assume she will be having surgery soon to repair the fractured
wrist.
We missed all of
you who did not attend this gathering. We surely do have lots of
fun. So hope you will be able to join us soon. If not at the next
mini reunion we hope you will come to the big 50th
celebration in Lubbock on September 25th thru 27th,
2009. Jean Patterson is doing an excellent job on the web site. Send her your recent photos with a little bit about
what has been going on with you in the past 50 years. She will post
it on the show and tell page.
I am still
working on trying to locate all of the classmates who are listed on
the roster as missing. R. D. Rowland is assisting me in this
effort. We have found one person. Her status has been changed from
missing to deceased. I hope we can find some others but I am afraid
that some may have passed away as well.
I guess this is
about all of the news for now. If you know of items that should be
reported to the class please do let me know. I will certainly do my
best to keep you all up to speed on what is going on with everyone.

Just now got home from vacation in San
Francisco. Happy to find "Fire in the Water..." for sale in City
Lights Book Store.
Will give due notice to MHS'59, as soon as I can get around to
updating virtualubbock; maybe later tonight but give me some
recovery time. I'll blog about it on MySpace, too. The site looks
cool! Can't wait to really start exploring it. Brilliant project.

I just got a chance to look at
the website you’ve created for our reunion. It is wonderful.
I look forward to coming to
Lubbock for the reunion. I’ve not been in Lubbock since the 1979
reunion. I retired from college teaching (English prof) in June,
2007, after 42 years. I own an editing service, working now largely
for college and universities on materials they put online. I work at
home in whatever attire I feel like wearing. I’ve also written three
plays since retirement, with one through table reading in D. C. and
one now under consideration with a theater in Houston. Since the
subject matter is about Texas and I went to Rice, I thought Houston
might be the right place for it. And the new Director of New Play
Production, Mark Bly, is from the Arena Stage in D. C. (I live 12
miles outside D. C. ), so I know his reputation with new plays. I
will fly to Norman, Okla., where Jane Ford Aebersold lives, and
drive to Lubbock with her. We have wonderfully managed to stay in
touch all the these years. I’m looking forward to hearing others’
life histories and seeing everyone still able to make it to the
reunion.

Thank you for all your wonderful work
on the Monterey website. It is great fun, and I look forward to seeing
more.
The tribute to Linda Elliott is very
nice, and well-deserved. She does a wonderful job of keeping us
informed. As an added note, I would like to suggest that folks
provide her with correct information. At the first mini-reunion at
Chuck Ellis' ranch outside Belton, Linda had her annual and we were
going through it to tell what we knew about classmates. It took us a
while to figure out that Tom Oxford was making up something if no
one knew anything about a person. And it [what he made up]
was not pretty!
What a great group we are. Keep us
the good work.
